Chris Luther has been
playing and studying music for the last 16 years.
He first started learning country guitar and
classic rock-n-roll. Chris attended Grimsley
High School in Greensboro and played for the
jazz band under the direction of Forrest Munden. For
four continuous summer sessions throughout high
school, he attended the Jamey Aebersol Jazz

order to become a true professional musician,
Jazz would become his lifelong study.
Chris
decided it was time to leave Greensboro, and he
moved to Wilmington in 2000. He first started to
hook up into the music scene thanks to the Rusty
Nail Jazz Jam which was then lead under
Classical and Jazz Guitarist, Marc Siegel. Chris
enrolled in Cape Fear Community College, and
started taking classes that included the CFCC
Jazz Combo under Mr. Siegel. After jamming around town
at various jam sessions, Chris began getting his
name out in the public eye. It was then
that he was asked to lead the Sunday night
traditional Jazz Jam at the famed Rusty Nail. He
continued to lead the jazz jam Saxophonist Benny
Hill took over in 2006. Overall Chris has lead
or been to the Jazz Jam every Sunday for almost 8
years now.
Chris had heard about a great
teacher named Bobby Russell on staff at the
University of North Carolina in Wilmington, and
decided that UNCW was his next stop. Chris carved
out a nice niche for himself in the jazz
community here in Wilmington. Throughout
college, Chris had the opportunity to perform in
Jazz combos, big bands, learn classical theory and
composition, and study privately with Professor
Bob Russell. Chris also studied keyboards,
Jazz Theory, and arranging with Professor Jerald
Shynett. He Graduated from UNCW in 2007 with a
